Day 5 14 August

After a continental breakfast we headed down to the public bus station for a 4 hour trip to Hoi An. The bus was a sleeper bus.

Some scenes from the bus

We continue on your journey to the World Heritage site of Hoi An, where we arrive at our hotel just before 12am the. I had a lunch of spring rolls before going on an orientation walk in the old quarter.

The city was a major trading port with the west from the 17th century onwards, and has a various architectural influences from Europe, China and Vietnam. Today the city is being restored and looks exactly like it did over a century ago.

Hoi An is the place where they make you a all types of clothes in a day. Suits cost around $100 and shirts around $20. You can be measured up or bring any type of clothing and they will copy. Copy rights to not exist.

After the walk the rest of the day is free. I wandered the old quarters, the Hoi An Market, the street stalls selling paintings, woodwork, ceramics, lanterns and much more. It’s also famous for its talented tailors, no trade protection here, who can make beautiful items to order within a few hours. I also purchased a belt as I had forgotten to include in the final pack, wide and leather.

Some Photos from the old quarter

The old quarter was similar to other towns we had visited. There was both a day market and a night market operating in the old quarter.

After the walk I went out to dinner and had some stir-fry noodle with squid. This was washed down with beer at 3,000 dong a glass. 40,000 dong is a dollar.

  1. Astrid and Soren would have been a fan of that dinner (minus the beer).
